Introduction
Willetton Junior Cricket Club (Inc) (WJCC) promotes a healthy approach to cricket for its members, families and spectators and supports the provision of a healthy environment around the Club. The Club has a focus on promoting a love for, and the promotion of the code of cricket, in the suburbs of Willetton and its surrounds. It encourages young people to participate in the playing of cricket in a way that supports the learning of cricket skills, teamwork and sportsmanship ahead of winning at all costs. It expects that all adults associated with the Club share these values and act as appropriate role models for its junior participants.
1.Tobacco
WJCC recognises that a smoke free environment protects non-smokers from the harmful effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and contributes to reducing tobacco consumption levels. WJCC will encourage quitting attempts and discourage the taking up of smoking - particularly for our young members- it
will:
1.1 Designate all indoor and the outdoor verandah area as 100% smoke free.
1.2 Ensure that all official functions conducted by WJCC will be 100% smoke free.
1.3 Ban the sale of tobacco products by WJCC or on any premises under the control of WJCC.
1.4 Require all coaches and manager of WJCC teams to not smoke while taking part in any program under the control
of WJCC.
2. Food and Catering
WJCC understands and recognises the importance of good nutrition and the role it plays in promoting health and optimal
performance for our young players. It will:
2. 1 Ensure that where food is available at functions and activities, a range of healthy food will be offered. This includes the provision of foods low in fat, high in fibre and with a substantial fruit and vegetable content.
3. Alcohol and Other Drugs
In the interest of health and safety WJCC will actively promote, encourage and support strategies to minimise harm from
alcohol and other drugs. It will:
3.1 Ensure all Junior members are provided with appropriate education material on the effects of excessive consumption of alcohol and its impact on performance and the potential harm of using prohibited or banned substances.
3.2 Not allow alcohol to be served at WJCC 's Club rooms during official functions where children are present, such as Registration Day.
3.3 Not allow participants under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs to participate in training or matches, in order to prevent harm to themselves and other participants.
3.4 The use of illicit or performance enhancing drugs will not be allowed at any activities under the control of WJCC.
3.5 Ensure that medications are used when needed, according to directions and under parental supervision.
3.6 Adopt and be guided by the Sports Medicine Australia policy on the administration of medications by non-medical personnel.
3.7 Discourage the use of medications in respect of injury/recovery that would enable participants to compete where they would not otherwise have been able to.
4. Sun Protection
WJCC recognises that exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has negative long term health effects and will therefore introduce measures to minimise the exposure to the sun by our members and their families. WJCC also recognises that cricket is an outdoor sport but will:
4.1 Provide free sunscreen in the clubhouse for use by participants and spectators, as required.
4.2 Lobby the Canning Council to increase the natural shade at all Reserves to protect participants and spectators, whenever possible.
4.3 Purchase additional sunscreens for use by participants and spectators.
5. Sport Safe
WJCC is committed to the safe participation of our members in cricket and the prevention of injury to them. It will:
5.1 Encourage coaches to ensure that their teams conduct warm-up, stretch and cool-down routines at all training sessions and matches.
5.2 Provide appropriate first aid training to relevant members and providing equipment such as stretchers at both Burrendah Reserve and Apsley Oval.
5.3 Encourage coaches to monitor that correct fluid replacement practices are followed by their players.
5.4 Ensure members, coaches and officiating personnel are given the opportunity to attend approved training and accreditation courses in coaching, sports injury prevention and treatment.
6. Emotional Health and Safety
WJCC recognises that the emotional health of its members and their families is as important as their physical health. The Club encourages a supportive and friendly environment for all members and it will:
6.1 Make all parents aware of the Club's approach to supervising its young members, as contained on its web site at www.wjcc.org.au, during the annual registration process. This approach promotes the physical and emotional well-being of children as of fundamental importance to the Club.
6.2 Require all disputes in matters of appropriate behaviour by members and their family to be handled in the first instance by the Club's Committee.
6.3 Require all coaches of Junior teams as from the 2006 season to obtain a Police clearance certificate in line with the WA and Federal laws. The costs for these certificates will be reimbursed by the Club.
7. Policy Updates
WJCC will review this policy annually to ensure that WJCC continues to provide a healthy cricket environment for its members and their families. It
will:
7.1 Ensure all members and their families associated with the Club are aware of the policy during the annual
registration process.
7.2 Place a copy of the policy on the WJCC web site.
7.3 Address breaches of this policy through the WJCC's Committee.
