Code of Conduct

1. Rationale

The Community Code of Conduct is informed by the following Overarching Statement.

Willetton JCC believes that all community members play a valuable role in the environment of the Willetton JCC and have the right to feel safe, secure, and supported in the community. The Willetton JCC also strives to nurture and uphold an inclusive culture where everyone feels a meaningful sense of belonging and connection. Members of the Willetton JCC community are expected to act in accordance with our Core Values of Respect, Courage and Compassion, upholding the ethos and reputation of the Club.

The Code of Conduct apply to Committee Members, coaches, volunteers, players, parents, relatives and guests of the Willetton JCC, whether in the Western Australian Cricket Competition or attending any Willetton JCC-related function, event or activity.

Players are responsible for treating all members of the Willetton JCC community with respect; upholding the rights of their peers to participate in a safe environment; maintaining high standards (dress, behaviour, punctuality, engagement, achievement, participation); representing the Willetton JCC in all activities in a manner that is consistent with the Willetton JCC’s core values.

Volunteers are responsible for upholding the Willetton JCC ethos of an inclusive and supporting environment. Willetton JCC expects its volunteers to treat all persons with respect and courtesy. Our daily interaction with others reflects on the Club’s reputation. Therefore, all volunteers are expected to be approachable, courteous and prompt in dealing with other people, including players, parents and other volunteers of the community.

Parents (includes guardians, step-parents and other carers) are responsible for supporting the efforts of the Willetton JCC in maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all players and in modelling the Willetton JCC’s core values. Parents fulfil this responsibility through respectful communication and engagement with Willetton JCC volunteers around their child’s progress and participation.

2. Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to and is binding upon all parents, guardians, carers, volunteers and other members of the Willetton JCC community.

3. Policy Statement

3.1 General Expectations

As members of the Willetton JCC community the following behaviours and standards are expected:

3.1.1 Respectful conduct

(a) Respect the diversity that exists within our community, treating people fairly and with dignity and respect at all times. This includes respecting other people’s ideas and opinions, their legal and moral rights and differences in other’s race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age and/or disability.

(b) Be a positive role model, and in doing so, uphold the ethos and values of the Willetton JCC.

(c) Not use profane, insulting, harassing, aggressive, overly personalised and/or otherwise offensive language (including swearing, derogatory terms, vilification, inappropriate jokes and/or innuendo) in the Willetton JCC environment, at any Willetton JCC Activity and/or around players and volunteers.

(d) Understand the negative impact that gossip can have within a cricket community and avoid commentary which is damaging and unconstructive (including uninformed rumour or speculation) with other members. This includes verbally and through social media or other forms of digital communication.

(e) When attending Willetton JCC events demonstrate appropriate conduct. This includes behaving respectfully and courteously towards players, participants, coaches, opposition (participants, supporters, officials, visitors) and showing respect for the rules, authority and spirit of the competition by word and example.

3.1.2 Communication with the Willetton JCC

(f) Be responsive to concerns raised by the Willetton JCC and Willetton JCC coaches members, including being cooperative and being open to invitations to discuss matters. When constructive feedback is provided, accept that it is being given with the intention of alleviating or resolving concerns and ultimately making the Willetton JCC a better place for all community members.

(g) Respect the rights, safety and wellbeing of all community members. This requires members of the Willetton JCC community to be mindful of maintaining appropriate professional and personal boundaries when interacting with coaches. It is also essential that all community members are treated with dignity and respect at all times.
(h) Communicate with other members of the Willetton JCC community in a manner that is courteous and respectful. This includes written and spoken language, whether in person, via telephone, email or in online forums.

3.1.3 Willetton JCC Property, Health and Safety

(i) Comply with occupational health and safety and risk-management policies and procedures. This includes the use of Willetton JCC facilities and resources as per applicable booking and usage policies and procedures.

(j) Demonstrate appropriate care and regard for Willetton JCC facilities and property. Visitors and users should promptly report any damage to the Willetton JCC. Users may be liable for costs associated with damage to facilities and property.

(k) Not smoke (including vaping) on Willetton JCC premises or at Willetton JCC Events and not use, carry or be under the influence of illicit drugs.

4. Expectations – Players

All players at Willetton JCC are expected to:

a) Uphold and actively demonstrate the right of every individual to be free from harassment, bullying, intimidation, and/or aggressive behaviour;

b) Act in a manner that honours and respects the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, cultures and values of all community members to ensure that every individual feels included. In doing so, refrain from any conduct that may be demeaning, discriminatory, marginalising and/or vilifying in nature;

c) Refrain from interfering with or inhibiting the learning of others;

d) Represent Willetton JCC in a manner that upholds the core values, ethos and reputation of the Willetton JCC.

e) Make attendance to all training and playing days a focus;

f) Take pride in their personal appearance and in the wearing of the correct uniform and cricket attire;

g) Demonstrate respect for the local community and use courtesy and appropriate language when with other members of the Willetton JCC;

h) Show respect for Willetton JCC buildings, contents and grounds and the possessions of other players, coaches and the Willetton JCC;

4.1 Players – What happens if a player breaches this Code of Conduct?

As a member of Willetton JCC, players hold a representative position of trust and are accountable for their actions. The consequences to a player for breaching this Code of Conduct will be determined at the discretion of the Willetton JCC Committee. This may result in a player receiving a sanction such as a written warning, suspension, probationary registration, removal of leadership position/office, and/or termination of registration.

5 Expectations – Coaches and Volunteers

Willetton JCC expects its coaches and other volunteers to treat all persons with respect and courtesy. Our daily interaction with others reflects on the Willetton JCC’s reputation. Therefore, all coaches are expected to be approachable, courteous and prompt in dealing with other people, including players, parents, other volunteers and members of the community.

5.1 Willetton JCC Volunteer expectations.

  • demonstrate care towards all of the players in your care;
  • perform your duties to the best of your ability;
  • where practical, ensure the safety of all others by being attentive to the conditions of Willetton JCC infrastructure and the existence of any hazards;
  • carry out your duties in a professional, competent and conscientious manner;
  • act honestly and in good faith in fulfilling your duties;

 

5.1.1 All coaches should take steps to not participate in or otherwise condone discriminatory, harassing or bullying behaviour. This includes:

  • showing insight into what constitutes inappropriate behaviour in the sporting space, including reflecting on their own unconscious bias and those observed in others;
  • avoiding gossip and respecting the confidentiality of complaint resolution procedures; and
  • speaking up or taking action where inappropriate behaviour is observed, commensurate with the nature/seriousness of the concern.

 

5.1.2 Volunteers who work with players have a special responsibility in presenting themselves as appropriate role models for players. Modelling effective leadership and respect in your interactions with players can have a profoundly positive influence on a player’s personal and social development.

5.1.3 Similarly, it is important for you to treat other volunteers, contractors, players and parents with respect. Rude or insulting behaviour, including verbal and non-verbal aggression, abusive, threatening, intimidating or derogatory language and physical abuse or intimidation towards other volunteers, contractors, players and parents is unacceptable. You must not use information and communication technologies, such as email, mobile phones, text or instant messaging, blogs, social media sites and other websites to engage in this type of behaviour.

5.1.4 Coaches and Volunteers – What happens if a player breaches this Code of Conduct?

As a member of the Willetton JCC, coaches and volunteers hold a representative position of trust and are accountable for their actions. The consequences to a coach or volunteer breaching this Code of Conduct will be determined at the discretion of the Willetton JCC Committee. This may result in a coach or volunteer receiving a sanction such as a written warning, suspension, probationary registration, removal of leadership position/office, and/or termination of registration.

5.2 Privacy and use of Willetton JCC information

(i) Not set up any online website, forum or group which features the Willetton JCC’s name or any derivative of its title unless formally approved by the Willetton JCC Committee.

(j) Not use or share any personal or private information that is provided by the Willetton JCC.

6. Expectations – Parents

At Willetton, we understand that parents (including guardians, step-parents and carers) are, and always will be, the primary teachers of their children. We know that family involvement in the Willetton JCC community, including supporting and upholding the Willetton JCC values, standards, has a positive correlation with player behaviour. Therefore, we recognise that the work we do as a JCC is most successful when we operate in a true partnership between home and Club.
As a parent or guardian, you should:

(a) Encourage your child(ren) to actively participate in the life of the Willetton JCC including in the breadth of sporting and social activities.

(b) Ensure the Willetton JCC remains informed about your child’s health needs. In doing so, parents and guardians are advised that while the Willetton JCC will take into account any new information, it cannot always accommodate every individual need.

(c) Be mindful of taking photos, videos or other recordings of a player without the consent of that player’s parent or guardian. This, and other personal information, concerning coaches, parent, player or other member of the Willetton JCC community should not be published online or elsewhere without express consent.

6.1 Parents – What happens if a player breaches this Code of Conduct?

The consequences for breaching this Code of Conduct will be determined at the discretion of the Willetton JCC Committee, and may result in the member(s) of the Willetton JCC community being:

(a) Invited to attend a meeting to discuss the matter;

(b) Directed to restrict communications with members of coaches through a nominated Willetton JCC representative;

(c) Banned from attending one or more Willetton JCC activity;

(d) Banned from being on the Willetton JCC grounds, in general, for a set time or permanently;

(e) In the case of an extreme or prolonged breach of this Code of Conduct by a parent, the Willetton JCC may terminate the registration of the child(ren) of that parent.

The Willetton JCC may take other steps as determined appropriate, according to the nature of the breach.

7. Complaints and Grievances

Complaints and/or grievances are to be raised with the Willetton JCC Committee, and the Willetton JCC Committee will endeavour to deal with these in a respectful and timely manner.
In general:

(a) Where possible a concern should be dealt with in the moment and directly with the parties involved. This should be done in an appropriate and respectful way that reflects and upholds the principles and expectations contained within this Code.

(b) Concerns or complaints can be raised through various channels and modes of communication, including phone, email or a face-to-face meeting. When raising a concern or complaint, the Willetton JCC Committee expects that this is done in a manner that is courteous and respectful.

(c) Where written communication is utilised, a complainant should express their concerns or complaints clearly and succinctly, along with the outcome they are seeking. Communications that are lengthy, overly demanding, inflammatory, accusatory, unrealistic and/or containing unsubstantiated commentary are not appropriate.

(d) The Willetton JCC Committee is committed to dealing with concerns, complaints, and grievances in a timely manner, however, it will not always be practicable to respond to or resolve matters as quickly as may be anticipated or requested.
